In this era a woman would often make the kimonos for the household, repair the ones they had as well as futons and anything else that needed repairing material wise. This was a woman's toolbox. And because they were so necessary and so often used, like many of the everyday but necessary items in Japan, they were beautifully made. These boxes are often used as jewelry boxes or for the storage of small items.
